SPC vs HDF Parquet: Which One Suits Your Space?

When you are looking for a wood-look floor, two names come up again and again: SPC parquet and HDF parquet. Both look elegant and install relatively quickly, but the difference in what they are made of makes each one better suited to certain spaces. Here is a simple explanation to help you choose.

What is SPC parquet?

SPC stands for Stone Plastic Composite: a mix of limestone powder and PVC. The result is a rigid, dense board topped with a printed wood-look layer and a clear protective wear layer.

Because its core contains no wood fibre, it is not affected by water and does not swell with humidity. That is its main advantage.

What is HDF parquet?

HDF stands for High Density Fiberboard: wood fibres pressed into a dense board, topped with a decorative wood-look layer and a scratch-resistant wear layer.

Its wood-fibre core gives it a warmer feel, closer to natural wood underfoot, but it is sensitive to standing water and high humidity.

When to choose SPC

  • Spaces exposed to water or humidity, such as kitchens and entrances.
  • High-traffic areas like shops and open-plan offices.
  • When you want a floor you can mop without worrying.

When to choose HDF

  • Bedrooms and living rooms, where a warm feel and natural look matter.
  • Offices and dry spaces that are not exposed to water.
  • When you want a wide range of wood shades.

Tip: In many homes the best solution is to combine both: SPC in the kitchen and entrance, HDF in the bedrooms and living room, in similar shades so the space feels consistent.

Caring for your floor

  • Clean with a well-wrung damp mop and avoid pouring water, especially on HDF.
  • Put felt pads under furniture legs to prevent scratches.
  • Use a doormat at entrances to reduce sand and dust.

The bottom line

Neither type is better in every case; what matters is the space itself. If there is water or heavy traffic, choose SPC. If the space is dry and you want the warmth of wood, choose HDF.
